Several years ago legislation required a
change in design
of home barbecue propane tanks and other portable tanks. Older tanks were
always filled by weight. The tank could be overfilled which was dangerous
to the user. The new tanks have an OPD - Overfill Protection Device -
valve which causes an automatic shutoff when the tank is filled. Retailers
are not permitted to refill tanks without the OPD protection. This has
been the law for over a year so most of these older tanks have been
recycled and removed. Sometimes tanks used as a reserve tanks or
homeowners with multiple tanks occasionally bring an illegal tank in to be
refilled. These tanks cannot be refilled, but can be exchanged for a cost
considerably below that of a new tank. How do you know if you have an
older tank? Look at the valve handle at the top of the tank. If it is
triangular like this one it is legal to refill it.
