Red-winged Blackbird

June…

Red-winged Blackbird

(Listen)

You can find these boldly colored birds by visiting marshes, wetlands, water hazards on golf courses or simply by watching telephone wires as you drive down the road. Many Rock Pile employees have seen the Red-winged Blackbird on their way to work. The glossy black males have scarlet and yellow shoulder patches while the females are a streaky brown color. Where there’s standing water and vegetation, our bird of the month is likely to be one of the most common birds you will see and hear. Listen for its conk-la-lee song. Red-winged Blackbirds may come to your yard for mixed seeds, particularly during migration. Spread seed on the ground as well, since this is where they prefer to feed.
