Pine Siskin

Click the play button below to hear the Pine Siskin’s call!

The most common of the “winter finches,” the Pine Siskin features two yellow wingbars at the base of flight feathers. Following a large irruptive winter flight, some individuals may stay near a dependable food source. So if you have a well stocked feeding station you may see these feathered friends in your backyard. Pine Siskins prefer to eat small seeds; also tree buds, insects, and spiders. Their favorite seed is Nyjer Thistle! Their heavily insulated nest helps keep the eggs warm in cold climates. In addition, the female incubates the eggs constantly, and is absent from the nest only for brief periods. Her mate feeds her while she sits on the nest.
