Mourning Dove

February…

Mourning DoveMourning Dove

Why mourning doves this month? These backyard birds are lovey dovey valentines. These birds are monogamous creatures… which has actually helped them in their survival as a species. With a true partnership, both parents equally contribute in the domestic duties of raising their young. The bonded pair establish and defend a territory from potential nest predators and other competing doves. When laying eggs, the female will lay 2 eggs at a time continuing the pairing pattern.

Mourning Doves are primarily ground feeders, but have been seen in platform feeders. Seeds make up 90% of their diet and they eat 12-20% of their body weight each day. So don’t worry if some seed falls to the ground this time of year… you may see some mourning doves cleaning up the dropped seed. Blends these birds would love include Buffet & Banquet! So go ahead… feed the birds this Valentine’s Day and Love a Dove!
